Our Breeding Philosophy

Having been breeding horses for nearly 30 years, we have developed some pretty strong opinions as to what works and what does not.

Everybody wants to breed beautiful, athletic, trainable babies, but it's not as easy as it seems. Time provides a perspective that sheds new light on old truisms. We have all bred to stallions because of their breathtaking movement, their competition record or the success of their offspring. This has sometimes worked and sometimes not.

Wills at three days

The number one thing we seek to produce is a trainable, tractable temperament - in other words, disposition. We also believe a majority of the genetic influence comes from the dam and so we are exacting in our selection of broodmares as we feel they contribute heavily to a foal's temperament. We feel ever so strongly that a sport horse can go farther in almost any discipline with a decent amount of talent and an extraordinary amount of trainability than with extraordinary talent but a difficult temperament. Of course, no one wants to produce an average horse and the commercial market demands looks and movement (often over temperament). European warmbloods exhibit such extravagant movement that buyers sometimes seem unable to stop themselves from buying a horse they will never be able to ride and/or train just because it looks fantastic. Our goal became to breed horses with the movement that would allow them to compete against the best, but with temperaments that would set them apart.

A stunning, palomino paint Georgian Grande Colt, this guy was doing canter pirouettes at 3 hours old! He is I/2 saddlebred and out of a draftcross mare. Please read what Dr. Deb Bennett has to say about the Saddlebred's suitability for dressage below. He is built very uphill, with a highset neck, very correct foundation and a lovely head. He's going to be fabulous for any sport but he will absolutely excel in dressage. He is handled daily, he leads, picks up his feet and stands tied. A one of a kind special guy. If you absolutely have to have something out of the ordinary, don't miss him. $6500

Dr. Deb Bennett, PhD., analyzed the American Saddlebred in her Applied Conformation series (in Equus 225):
"For more than 100 years, American Saddlebreds have been produced for the purpose of carrying a riders weight comfortably and efficiently. I have never seen any Saddlebred horse - even a part bred - who did not readily perform the passage. Most have incredibly comfortable and coordinated canters as well, I think they are the most neglected of all breeds suitable for dressage."
